I Did it Myself!... Sorta

One of the biggest trends that I love right now are the hair flowers. I love all kinds of hair adornments, actually, but especially hair flowers. Preferably with some feathers or something shiny attached :D

I have spent many hours on etsy, as I'm sure many of us have, searching for the perfect hair flower.

There is this pretty, little lovely... It's got the flowers and something shiny. But at the price of $64, I kept looking.

(Source)

Next up was this sassy number. Sadly, there were no feathers or shiny things so I moved on...

(Source) $36

Finally, I stumbled upon this beauty... I immediately bookmark it to save it for later.

(Source) $30

Then, as fate would have it, I happened into Hobby Lobby on a random Tuesday afternoon and found this...

This puppy was a whole $2.99! Apparently, Hobby Lobby carries a line of hair flowers and other stuff that you can put on your own headband...or in my case, an alligator clip :D

This is how it came.

Hair down... (Please excuse my lack of makeup)

Makeshift up-do :)
(haha I just noticed that bunny on my shoulder, I guess he wanted to make a cameo.)

So what do yall think??? I can't believe no one has spilled the beans on this Hobby Lobby secret yet! Or maybe they have, I just wasn't paying attention... Anyway, they have a pretty good selection of hair stuff, yall should check it out!

What are you wearing in your hair for the big day?

Making things to make your cupcakes look cute.

If you are like me, you browse through countless wedding blogs whenever humanly possible. I love seeing all the lovely little details of DIY weddings and stare longingly, wondering how to make them.

Today I wanted to try those cute, little cupcake signs that have been seen on Stylemepretty.

Here is my inspiration picture.

(Source)

How cute are these?? But they are $9.00 for a set of 12, and that could add up really fast, especially if you have a large guest list. For example, if your guest list is 150, you would need 13 sets of 12, which comes out to (carry the 3, subtract the 1) $113.00.

So, enough blabbing, here is my attempt at making them.

Here are the supplies I used.

Stuff I had to buy:

Big scalloped edge hole punch thingy (2 inch)- $8.95
Slightly smaller circle hole punch (1.5 inch)- $7.95
"Woodsies" wooden sticks (5.75 inch)- $2.99
Glue sticks- $1.99

Stuff I had:

Hot glue gun
Construction paper
Left over card stock from our save the dates
"letter" stickers

I made the huge mistake of buying the Fiskars scalloped circle cartridge, which doesn't work without this specific tool that doesn't come in the package. Brilliant. Plus, it was twice the price of the one that actually worked.(stay far, far away)

Here is a closer look at the hole punch thingies

I started by cutting out a few of each of the circles, playing around with patterns and colors from the left over card stock I had.

Then, I hot glued the circle onto the stick. I didn't want to leave the stick exposed on the back so I glued the matching color onto the back.

Then, I dug up some sticker letters that I had from a long time ago. If I decide to make a whole bunch of these, I will definitely get a different color.

All in all, I think these turned out so cute and I was so excited to make them! I have been seeing them everywhere and I love the idea of cupcakes instead of a traditional cake.

I also saw the heart shaped hole punch that I may go back and buy. It looks really cute too.

Total money spent on supplies- $22.00

I will also say that these little things are really fun and fast to make. It took me about 8-10 minutes to make 4 of them.

What DIY project did you finally try after seeing it everywhere on the wedding blogs?

Save the date hankies!!!

Hey yall! Hope you had a great weekend. My weekend was very productive, in fact. I mentioned last week that I got my "Vintage hankies" in the mail and I promptly got started washing them and ironing them out. I am so happy with they way they turned out! They are better than I could have hoped for! Check it out...

Here's what your going to need for this endeavor.

1. Ink Jet printer (mine is like 5 years old and worked perfectly)

2. Vintage Hankies- I bought mine here on Ebay. I highly recommend this seller. The shipment came so fast and they came all the way from China!

3. Scissors

4. Cotton pillowcase (do NOT use an ironing board... I don't know why, but the box said so. I tend to believe boxes)

5. Fabric Transfers (I used Avery brand Light Fabric Transfers)
Make sure you get the Light Fabric Transfers for light cotton/polyester fabrics.

The first thing I did was mess around on Microsoft Word to try and come up with a pretty design for the hankies.

I found a free clip art of a palm tree and sampled a ton of fonts from DaFont before I came up with a design I was happy with.
Here is the final design.

Then, I realized that if I was going to screen print this design, I would have to figure out a way to flip the image so it would print backwards. I googled this and most of the solutions I found were to change the settings on the printer. This didn't work for me. If you have a Mac, the solution is much easier. Simply open the image in "preview" and click on "tools" at the top of the screen. Then select "flip horizontal" and Voila, We're in business! Now, it's time for printing!

I arranged the design in groups of 4 because...that's how many fit on one page :D

Make sure you put the paper faced down in the printer.

Bad things happen if you print them the other way. Yep.

So after I printed them out, I cut the design out as close as possible.

I decided I wanted to put the design on the corner of the hankie, that way it would look pretty when I folded it.

Then I ironed on the design. The instructions say to firmly press down on the design for 45 seconds. This time amount seemed to work pretty well.

Please excuse our floor tile, I truly believe it was cool in 1970 :D

After you iron on the design, let it sit for 2 minutes and then slowly pull the paper up.
And now, for the finished product...

*drum roll*

Yay! I am so excited with how they turned out! I can't believe I actually successfully accomplished a DIY project! I feel like I can take on the world now.

So, now all I have to do is figure out a cute way to display and send them. I have seen some cute ideas, but that's another blog post in itself. Do you have any DIY projects that you especially proud of?

My very own DIY fail.

So one of the first DIY projects I wanted to undertake was our save the dates! I figured that these would be a good test for me. A test, that sadly, I failed miserably. It's really quite comical, you see.

I figured that they would turn out something like....this
(source)

Ok, so maybe that's aiming a little high for one of my first DIY projects, but hey, what can I say, I'm a dreamer.

The first thing I decided to do was make sure that I would be able to address the envelopes I bought with my printer. I really had my heart set on this because I'm pretty sure I could totally fool people with faux-ligraphy that I downloaded from DaFont

This is what I wanted the addresses to look like.
(Better Heather on DaFont)
Did I mention the font is free?

So here is where the humor starts. I worked on this for a couple of hours (don't judge me) and I feel like pictures say it best.

Yep, thats Mr. HB trying to get my tiny envelope out of the printer. He asked me why I put such a small envelope in the printer and I just told him he wouldn't understand. What? He wouldnt.

And so, I leave you with the finished product.Notice the detailed ink stains on the envelope. I call that 'tarnished' it's very vintage.

Sadly, I think the save the dates will be retired to the graveyard of DIY failure. Maybe those Vistaprint save the dates weren't so bad after all.

Did you have any DIY failures? Was it something you completely underestimated on the difficult meter?

DIY: RIbbon wreath

"I always wanted to be somebody. Now I realize I should have been more specific"- Lily Tomlin

I would consider myself a DIY novice. I really like trying new DIY projects, but somehow they never turn out like the crafty little bloggers who originated the project.

Oh well! The key is to stick to projects that aren't that hard, but look really hard! That's when people really get impressed ;)

So, my latest endeavor is a crafty little number for Christmas. I'm so darn excited that Christmas is around the corner and I may, or may not, have been listening to Christmas music on Pandora last week while doing laundry. OK, so enough about how I'm ready for Christmas, here's the project. A ribbon wreath!

Warning: This project is not cheap, ribbon is super-duper expensive and you will need more than you think.

Here's what you need:
1. Wire wreath frame. Can be purchased at Michaels in the floral dept. They had 2 sizes, I picked the smaller one. (.99)
2. Ribbon, lots and lots...and lots of ribbon. 1.5 inch ribbon is perfect, I noticed if you get smaller ribbon (which I made the mistake of doing) The wreath doesn't look as full or pretty.
I bought 2 rolls of red, 3 rolls of white and 2 rolls of red and its barely going to cover half of the wreath.

I found it easier to tie the ribbon in a knot, then in a bow so the bows come out prettier. After tying them, cut the tail ends of the bows in a diagonal so they look super-cute! The cool thing about this project is that if I like the way it turns out I am going to make one for every season for our door.

I was also thinking that you could make them for your wedding instead of flowers or standard ribbon.
You could use them as pew decorations at the church...

(source)

Or, spruce up a bland door...

(source)

Or to liven up your sweetheart table, or even the chairs...

Do you have any super-easy DIY project that looks amazing that you would be willing to share?
